Linda Bawden

Today, we gather here to celebrate the extraordinary life of Linda Bawden, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend. Linda’s journey through life was one of remarkable resilience, unwavering love, and countless cherished memories that have left an indelible mark on all of us.

Linda was born in Conisbrough and was the middle child of Ernest and Peggy. Growing up alongside her two sisters, Jacqueline and Margaret, Linda brought a sense of joy and warmth to their family home. Her childhood in Conisbrough was filled with laughter, adventure, and the unbreakable bonds of family love.

After completing her education at Northcliffe Comprehensive, Linda embarked on the journey of adulthood with a spirit of determination and optimism. She left school at the age of 15, working mainly in the food and drink businesses, including Ward’s Brewery, the Pegler, Wood Yard and many more. It could be said that she’d leave one job one day, and start another the next. Although when she got married, family life became her job, and she didn’t really work after that.

It was during this time that Linda’s life took a momentous turn when she met the love of her life, Robert. Their love story began with a chance encounter on a bus in 1968, Robert said it was love at first sight…I suppose. On 23rd August 1969, Linda and Robert exchanged vows at the Doncaster Registration Office, marking the beginning of a lifelong partnership built on mutual respect, understanding, and unwavering devotion. Together, they embarked on a new chapter of their lives, eventually settling in at 38 Windhill Crescent, where they built a home filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.

In the years that followed, Linda and Robert welcomed two beautiful daughters, Amanda, and Bernadette, into their lives. Linda embraced motherhood with open arms, pouring her heart and soul into raising her daughters with love, patience, and unwavering support. She was a constant source of strength and encouragement to her children, always there to offer a listening ear, a comforting hug, or a word of wisdom. As a mother, Linda’s love knew no bounds. She devoted herself wholeheartedly to her family, nurturing her daughters with unconditional love and instilling in them the values of kindness, compassion, and resilience. Her daughters, in turn, grew up to embody the same qualities of strength and compassion that defined their mother’s character. When the grandkids and great grandkids came along, she cherished them with all her heart. She loved all of them, Shane, Adam, Arron, Matthew, Cameron, Alfie, Marianne, Elsie, and Jack were all special to Linda.

When Linda wasn’t looking after her family, she found joy in exploring the world with Robert by her side. They shared a love of travel and would often embark on adventures together, creating cherished memories that would last a lifetime. Whether it was a leisurely stroll along the beach in Bridlington, Cleethorpes, or Devon, or a more adventurous journey to Tenerife, Linda and Robert always found joy in each other’s company. Linda would also take Bernadette’s children with her to the caravan when Bernadette was working. The kids loved to go to Grandma’s caravan.

During their travels, Linda and Robert had the opportunity to meet and form lasting friendships with people from all walks of life. From Darren and Jayne to June and Gerry, Angie and Wayne, Mel and Alan, and Graham, the bonds they forged with their fellow holidaymakers were as strong as any family ties. They also made lifelong friends in Tenerife, including Jacqui and Sean, Irish Ann, Christy, Ann and Glynn, and Diane and Glynn, who became like family to them over the years.

Linda had a gift for traditional cooking that was second to none. Her kitchen was always filled with the tantalising aroma of her delicious homemade pies, pastries, and stews, not forgetting her perfect Yorkshire puddings. Tea was always on the table waiting for the family to come home from work.

In her leisure time, Linda found joy in simple pleasures—reading her favourite Martina Cole novels, listening to the timeless melodies of 60’s era music, with The Beatles holding a special place in her heart, and indulging in her favourite TV shows, particularly the soaps, I’m a Celebrity, and Strictly Come Dancing. Linda loved to socialise with her friends and family. More often than not getting a carry out from the pub when it closed so they could continue to party elsewhere.

Linda’s life was defined by her boundless love and generosity of spirit. She had a heart of gold and a smile that could light up a room, and she touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her presence and big hugs will be deeply missed, but her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those she loved.

As we bid farewell to Linda today, let us take comfort in knowing that she is at peace, surrounded by the love of those who went before her. May her spirit continue to guide and inspire us, reminding us of the power of love, kindness, and compassion in our own lives.

Rest in peace, dear Linda. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

Funeral Service was conducted at Rotherham Crematorium at 10:15am on 15th April 2024.
